SAIC's study trip : Zeitgeist - 100 Years Bauhaus

Zeitgeist - 100 Years Bauhaus
Tentative Dates: July 7 - July 20, 2019
Bauhaus
This study trip offers in 2019 a unique experience -100 Years Bauhaus! In 2019 Germany will be celebrating the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus, together with partners all over the world. Founded in Weimar in 1919, relocated to Dessau in 1925 and closed in Berlin under pressure from the Nazis in 1933, the school of design only existed for a total of 14 years. Despite this, the influence of the Bauhaus continues right down to the present day all over the world. In this amazing trip we will visit ALL three major sites (Weimar, Dessau, Berlin) of Bauhaus history and more places to experience this legacy first hand.

After starting the class in Munich, Germany, we will travel to Weimar, the birthplace of the Weimar Republic and the foundation of Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus. The German term Bauhaus—literally "construction house"—was understood as meaning "School of Building", but in spite of its name and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus did not have an architecture department during its first years of existence.

The Bauhaus University Weimar is partner of SAIC where we will engage in workshops and visits to local centenary museum exhibitions, and spend time with students and faculty of the Bauhaus experiencing it's rich and amazingly influential history. Next stop is Dessau, the second site of the historical Bauhaus. In Dessau we will see Gropius' famous facilities and additional centenary exhibitions and experience the Bauhaus history first hand because we will stay on the Bauhaus Campus in the original building. Finally we will travel to Berlin, where participants will work in a studio in Berlin Mitte, see yet more exciting and unique exhibitions regarding the Bauhaus, and prepare an exhibition themselves responding to the trip and concluding this adventure.
