A crusade to end grading in high schools



The high school transcript is the single most influential component of college admissions. But recently the push for more informative measures of student performance has intensified. The Mastery Transcript Consortium, a four-year-old coalition of 300 public and private schools in the U.S. and abroad, has been in the forefront of the movement to replace the traditional transcript with a more comprehensive and nuanced picture of student achievement, one that conveys to colleges talents such as critical thinking, collaboration and creativity and at the same time allows colleges to drill down more deeply into students’ skills. This story is a profile of the movement to restructure the way high schools track student performance that it represents.
