......本文開首提到，學生曾要求大學校長對現在社會事件表態，學生似乎相信大學校長作為社會賢達，他們的取態能夠左右政府的決定。但近日事態的發展讓我們明白到所謂大學自主其實非常脆弱，而所謂大學的光環在政權和民粹面前更不值一哂。筆者記得港大程介明教授曾指出，對學術自由的重視是香港高等教育成功的其中一項關鍵因素。他更提到：「人們的觀念、社會的共識，都認為學術自由是社會的崇高境界。學術自由，從實質上來說，並不是一種政治概念，而是讓學者和學生在最寬闊的空間裏面不受干預地尋找真理、維護真理。香港在這方面是很突出的，特別是在一個比較崇尚權威的東亞社會裏面，難能可貴。」這觀念與共識曾體現於香港的大學管治的制度中，故我們反覆強調院校自主。但當面對嚴重社會分岐，各方都希望自主的大學站在自己這一邊，卻很少人想到學術自由將被這選邊站隊的要求所蠶食。
