Debt burden weighs heavy for German students

The German education system is in a state of flux. Since 2005, when university fees were introduced in the country, the new generation of German students is coming to terms with student debt for the first time.

Although the fees are typically around 500 euros for each semester studied - modest by global standards - there are signs that students are having trouble adjusting. Most are supported by their parents, and over half work while studying, yet according to the German student union, 40 percent of all students still have trouble financing their studies.

In an effort to help ease the strain, the Dortmund student union now offers students professional debt counseling. In this report, we'll hear from a student - one of many - whose growing debt weighs increasingly on her mind.
